Y Garn (Glyderau) - 947 m (3,107 ft)
Y Garn is the 10th highest peak in Wales. It is a popular name for a Welsh mountain. Y Garn is a name that is shared with three other lower peaks in Wales. Hence the mountain range in brackets after the name.
To the east of the summit, below the bwlch (col) between Y Garn and Glyder Fawr is a spectacular big black cleft in the rockface, overlooking Cwm Idwal, known in English as the Devil's Kitchen and in Welsh as Twll Du (meaning Black Hole).
See its entries on Walkhighlands or Wikipedia or view it from above on Google Earth.
Y is the definite article. Garn (from the Welsh word Carn with C soft-mutated to G after the definite article) means Cairn.
So, Y Garn simply means The Cairn.
