Membership Categories

BBMC has three categories of membership:

  • Company Membership for BB companies which will allow any members of the company (over 11 years of age) to join in BBMC activities
  • Battalion Membership for BB battalions which will allow any members of companies within the battalion (over 11 years of age) to join in BBMC activities
  • Activity Leader Membership for registered BB leaders who may or may not be members of companies or battalions that are in membership with the BBMC and who have outdoor qualifications that they want to use to train young people and other BB leaders on BBMC events and be appointed as an Activity Leader or who want to train for such qualifications and be appointed as an Assistant Leader. Only those appointed as Activity Leaders or Assistant Leaders can attend a BBMC meet without bringing young people

There are currently no membership fees required for any membership category.

For companies and battalions where there are other leaders who would be interested in receiving information direct from the Club, please ask them to complete a Consent Form making sure that they fill in the name of the company or battalion to which they belong.

All adults attending meets as part of a Company or Battalion membership must be registered with BBHQ and possess a current DBS disclosure for working in the Boys’ Brigade. This ensures that Brigade Insurance is in place. For weekend or longer meets it is the responsibility of the Battalion or Company that the Officer in charge of their young people carries out risk assessments, holds the necessary qualifications and notifies BBHQ of the event. BBMC has risk assessments for the activities only – which is what we are responsible for organising, leading and supervising – At all times young people attending meets remain the ultimate responsibility of their accompanying officers/leaders.

Any member with appropriate outdoor leadership qualifications (or training for such qualifications) can apply to be appointed as an Activity Leader or Assistant Leader, which will allow them to lead BBMC activities and train young people and other BB leaders.

The appropriate minimum qualifications for Activiity Leaders are:

  • BB's Expedition and Outdoor Leadership Advanced Certificate for mountain and moorland walking.
  • Mountain Training UK's Mountain Leader Award for Grade 1 rock scrambling
  • Mountain Training UK's Rock Climbing Instructor's Award for single pitch rock climbing and abseiling.
  • British Cycling's or Mountain-Bike Instructors' Award Scheme's Mountain Bike Leaders Award Level 2, for mountain biking.

If a BB leader does not have these minimum qualifications, but is willing to train for one or more of them, they can apply to be appointed an Assistant Leader and they will then be able to gain experience of leading activities under the supervision of an Activity Leader.

Anyone wishing to apply to be appointed as an Activity Leader or an Assistant Leader should complete the Activity Leader Form. They will then be told what other information is required.
